A friend of mine from the Y recently invited me to join her playgroup. I’m so glad I did. Being a new girl in town, it’s a nice way to meet people, and just get out of the house with the kids once in a while. I hate to admit this, but I never think to just take the kids out somewhere, just for fun. In the summer, there are days that we’d go to a park, or just take some time to enjoy the yard, but I’ve never been one of those moms who just schedules time to go out with the kids, especially in winter. The to-do list is always so long that I never think to take time out from the usual routine. Being in a playgroup is changing that. Now that I have invitations to do these things, I make the effort to fit them into our weekly schedule. The kids are loving it and I’m enjoying spending time with other moms as well. Here’s what we’ve done so far…
- Today we visited the Neville Public Museum and let the kids enjoy the Discovery Room for a while, and quickly strolled through the exhibits. The kids run through the exhibit area, so there’s really no time to stop and look at anything, but they like it anyway! The Discovery Room is great though. There are lots of fun learning toys and the kids pretty well occupied themselves so the moms could chat (definitely a plus!). My three had a great time and are already asking when we’ll go back.
- Last week we went to Chuck E. Cheese’s. This was the FIRST time I’ve taken the kids there, with the exception of Emily going when she was about 1 yr. old. It was a challenge keeping tabs on my kids in there and it was for the other moms as well (thank goodness for the kid check system!). Luckily my kids all sat and ate nice at the table. When it was time to play though, Josh would take off running and it was easy to lose him among all the games and rides. Sam was a bit overwhelmed by everything so he stuck close to me and asked to be held a lot. Emily really liked it until she went up into the tunnel system mounted on the ceiling. She was too afraid to come down the slide and didn’t see me standing 10ft. away when she climbed back down the entrance. She got scared and asked someone for help. Suddenly I was being paged to the salad bar to collect my daughter. She was pretty upset after that so we didn’t stay much longer. I’m very glad that she knew what to do when she got “lost” though! I think we’ll have to visit CEC’s again, but with Dad along next time to help keep tabs on everyone!
- We also visited our local library for the FIRST time with our playgroup. Sad, but true, I know. They occasionally have a preschool story time with activities, so the kids really enjoyed that, and then we checked out our first set of books. The boys are constantly asking to go to the library now. My kids love books, and they also like the little playroom in the children’s section.
- Our local mall has a little play area, that we’ve never taken advantage of. I never thought it would be such a big treat to let the boys run around in there, but it sure was! It’s a nice enclosed area with lots of seating for the parents to sit and chat and watch the kids climb around on giant foam shapes.
Overall, being in the playgroup has been great. We’re getting out, exploring our city and all it has to offer. We’re meeting new people, making new friends, and just having a great time. A very big thank you to Carol for inviting me. I really appreciate it!!!
